Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European match against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," said the player after his debut.

"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the option to represent either country at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club chase future success.

Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
