UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to each person."

The core gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
