The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
The co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal collection showcasing issues the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators and Parent Company
This latest announcement escalates the ongoing tension between the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted how the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through social media how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally created in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed that he will create additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been undermined after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
