Taliban Used Discarded British Equipment to Track Down Local Nationals That Served With Western Forces, Investigation Hears

An informant has told an official investigation that British authorities abandoned confidential equipment permitting Afghanistan's rulers to identify Afghans who worked with international military.

Data Breach Endangers Numerous in Danger

Person A, called Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the data leak were advised to relocate and switch their mobile numbers to protect themselves from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are looking into the UK government's response of a massive leak of personal details involving nearly 19,000 individuals who had requested to relocate to the United Kingdom to avoid the Taliban.

How the Leak Occurred

A data file including private information, such as names, contact details and occasionally relative details, was accidentally leaked by a staff member employed at British military command in early 2022.

The leak came to light only in August 2023, when identities of several individuals who had sought to relocate to the UK surfaced on social media.

Regime's Resources

It appears there is a false assumption that the Taliban are without similar capabilities that we have,” she told lawmakers.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Once they acquire a contact number, they can trace you down to within metres. That's precisely what specialized teams achieved.”

During testimony about if militant forces possessed sophisticated technology, Person A declared: “They have complete capability.”

Aftermath of the Information Leak

Preliminary research submitted to the committee indicated that no fewer than forty-nine kin and associates of Afghans affected by the leak had been murdered.

A legal restriction concerning the leak was enacted in August 2023 and restricted relevant facts about it from being made public until mid-2025.

Security Recommendations

Because she was restricted, Person A and the aid group she collaborated with told individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they change residence when possible and changed their mobile numbers. These represented the primary information that, should militant forces obtained this information, would lead to their location being found,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower contested that government assessment conducted by a former official had been incorrect to determine that the obtaining of the records by militant forces was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are not standing up to militant forces; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

The source explained disturbing violence endured by affected individuals, comprising electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and violent assaults.

“We have had young kids who have had limbs fractured to pressure households to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
