New York Introduces Online Platform for Citizens to Report ICE Images Following Detentions of 4 American Citizens

New York state attorney general has introduced a fresh digital platform asking locals to share images and footage of federal immigration enforcement around New York. This move comes just a day after a high-profile immigration operation shook Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking widespread demonstrations.

US Citizens Held In Raid

A lawmaker revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were detained and held for "almost a full day" after the previous day's operation. Demonstrations occurred in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"Each citizen has the right to exist without intimidation," state officials wrote in a release.

"For those who saw and captured immigration enforcement recently, I ask you to provide that material with my office. We are pledged to examining these accounts and evaluating any violations of law."

Form Details

The form includes spaces to submit photos and videos of the incident, plus a area to note location information. Before submitting, submitters must tick a box that acknowledges that "authorities may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, such as in a legal proceeding or official statement."

Information about the Chinatown Raid

The enforcement action, which witnesses say included dozens of federal agents, occurred in a well-known district of Manhattan where imitation products and other goods are regularly available en masse – frequently to sightseers.

Recordings of Tuesday's raid show several covered and weaponized personnel zip-tying and detaining a person, and shoving away onlookers. Masses of residents trailed the officers down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the city streets.

Leadership Statements

In a midweek briefing held with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, stated that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be taken for without cause." He noted the persons were let go on Wednesday with no charges filed.

"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman stated. "This constitutes a armed campaign to create conflict. It is purely a pretext to incite violence for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to halt conflict that they initiated."

Widespread Condemnation

Outrage over the ICE raid rapidly grew – all three mayoral candidates denounced the incident, as did the state leader.

"Once again, the Trump administration chooses heavy-handed tactics that create fear, rather than security. It needs to cease," a political candidate declared.

New York City advocacy organizations expressed outrage too.

"Federal officers targeted the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and protective equipment to target street vendors attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to community security and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," said the head of a advocacy group.

ICE Policies

ICE policy bans the holding of citizens and the bureau has claimed it does not arrest or detain US citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has found that numerous American nationals have been taken illegally by immigration authorities since the beginning of the existing leadership.

Current Situation

Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in New York and nationwide this year.

A mid-October raid in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations against ICE are widespread along with allegations of aggression and abusive practices.

Most recently, a submission submitted by civil rights groups alleged inadequate care of women with child in ICE facilities.
