New Year Partygoers Told to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Expected Throughout the UK
Meteorologists have indicated a frosty start to the new year, with snow anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Proceed Despite Warnings
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are set to proceed, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies
Across the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be low, so additional clothing essential, according to forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday
As we enter Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- People are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.
Readings Set to Drop Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Medical Alerts Activated
In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials explained this indicated the weather was expected to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
