Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
At least 16 lives were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.
The victims have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
