Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
