Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
